New moms are bombarded by so many sources of well-intentioned advice for how to raise a child, but rarely does that advice include one of the biggest challenges of all… the challenge of loneliness and isolation.
According to the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services,
“Our epidemic of loneliness and isolation has been an underappreciated public health crisis that has harmed individual and societal health. Our relationships are a source of healing and well-being hiding in plain sight – one that can help us live healthier, more fulfilled, and more productive lives,” said U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. “Given the significant health consequences of loneliness and isolation, we must prioritize building social connection the same way we have prioritized other critical public health issues such as tobacco, obesity, and substance use disorders. Together, we can build a country that’s healthier, more resilient, less lonely, and more connected.”
This epidemic applies to individuals in all age groups and all walks of life, including our mothers raising young children. The church is uniquely positioned to have a tremendous impact on this epidemic. A new ministry effort launched this past week to provide a source for building the connections and relationships so vital for preventing loneliness and isolation.
Coffee Break now meets on Wednesday mornings in the Cornerstone Room starting at 8:20 am, just after students are dropped off in the preschool. Day school mothers are invited to join either at 8:20 or after chapel concludes. All moms are welcome… and so are any children.
This group enjoys casual conversations and connection over coffee. They’ll discuss common challenges like stress, anxiety, and the loneliness of motherhood while providing tips and resources to help moms feel more supported. Last week the topic of Community was discussed, and moms were sent home with this handout. Coffee Break is a light, discussion-based group led by a Social Work Student, offering a welcoming space to recharge and grow with other moms.
If you are a mom looking for connections, please join us this Wednesday. If you know of a mom needing connection, please help us spread the word. For questions, feel free to contact Michelle Leahy.
